On November 7, 2004, just a few days after Kentucky became one of 11 states to amend its Constitution to officially ban same-sex-marriage, Rev. Eklof, minister of a Louisville, KY church at the time, informed his congregation he could no longer, in good conscience, perform weddings for anyone until he was free to perform them for everyone. According to Rev. Eklof, "Although I wouldn't have changed a thing, I never realized the impact this decision would have on my life and career."

Hands Across Monroe 2012
Last year in Spokane, nearly 200 people joined hands across the east side of the Monroe Street Bridge in solidarity with Hands Across Hawthorne in Portland. The Portland event was organized to show support for the LGBTQ community after an assault on 2 gay men after crossing the Hawthorne Bridge. It also sent a message: violence will not be tolerated in our community. Spokane heard that message.

Spokane knows all too much about violence. In 2010 and for years prior to that, we have a higher rate of nearly every crime compared to the US average (http://www.city-data.com/crime/crime-Spokane-Washington.html) All to often we here about our friends and family being affected by violence in our communities. The LGBTQ community has felt this violence first hand.
Hands Across Monroe is a time for the Spokane community to come together and show the love that abounds within this community. It's a time for your friends and family to meet my friends and family. It's a time for all off us to join hands and share a better message about our community. One of love and celebration.
Please join us as we join hands across the Monroe Street Bridge. Invite your friends and family and lets try to fill both sides of the bridge this year!
We'll gather by the runner's statues in Riverfront Park, then march to the bridge as a group like we did last year. Please feel free to bring signs, flags, and friends.
Location: Monroe Street Bridge
Time: 6:00pm ALL AGES

Washington State Human Rights Commission Sexual Orientation/Gender Identity Rulemaking Workgroup
In January 2006, the Washington State passed legislation that added sexual orientation to the list of "protected classes" under the Washington State Law Against Discrimination (WLAD), otherwise known as RCW 49.60.
Under this law, the Washington State Human Rights Commission must develop rules and guidelines to eliminate discrimination in employment, housing, credit and insurance transaction and the use of public accommodations based on sexual orientation. This may require updating, revising or amending the administrative codes (WAC 162) that deal with the WLAD.
The public is invited to come and provide input into the implementation of sexual orientation/gender identity as a protected class from discrimination under the WLAD.
